Semi-realistic paintings

An unforeseen happenstance

It was never my intention to develop this ‘semi-realistic’ style; a label given to my paintings in this style when exhibiting at the Mrs Jones Art Gallery in Shrewsbury. I had always thought I would painting a more impressionistic/modern style, I avoid the phrase contemporary as this is an inaccurate description overused in the press when they did not know how else to label artists in my opinion, after all are not all living artists contemporary?

It was the love of the Isles of Scilly that first lead to me wanting to depict something in this way, to truly capture what is saw and loved before me.

Some say artists have a natural stylistic language and I have to say I find it easier to paint in this manner whereas my more impressionistic paintings are more of a challenge as I do not have a clear image in my head of the resulting image I am trying to achieve when I start the piece – that said I love the different experiences from painting in both these styles so, for now, I will continue to explore each and see where they will take me.
